See Through 4 is a moniker for a rotating cast of Toronto-based musicians that play tunes by bassist Pete Johnston. On this outing Johnston is joined by Rebecca Hennessy on trumpet, Karen Ng on saxophone, and Jake Oelrichs on drums.

"Bog Standards" is the first album of a jazz trilogy by See Through 4. The tunes here are re-imaginings of songs from Pete Johnston's See Through Music back catalogue, made with a new combination of veterans from previous See Through projects. The influences of Jimmy Giuffre, Carla Bley, and Ornette Coleman shine through these performances, but more important is the entirely more local chemistry between the players, who have played together across many different ensembles in Toronto over the years.

This acoustic album is a whole world of artistic trumpet playing portrayed in sound. The extraordinary material and the various sophisticated improvisational patterns are convincingly performed. 'Buchfink' is particularly noticeable for its jazzy feel, fine thematic development and muted sound experience. A trumpet doesn't need electronics to help it sound better. It already sounds perfect.
